TEMPORARY STAFFING

Temporary staffing is often referred to in the healthcare industry as locum tenens, or locum for short. Locum tenens is a Latin term meaning “to hold the place of”. In the medical field, traditionally it was used to refer to a physician who fills in for another physician on a temporary basis. This term has now been extended to include any healthcare provider who provides temporary coverage.

Why Hire Temporary Staff?

Healthcare facilities will typically hire temporary staff when the facility is short-staffed or expected to be short-staffed in the near future. In situations where the healthcare facility is expected to be temporarily short-staffed, as is the case when a clinician goes on maternity leave, sick leave, or vacation, it is most appropriate to bring on locum coverage to fulfill the clinical duties of the clinician on leave until they return. Locum coverage may also be more desirable for facilities in tourist and vacation destinations in which there are peak seasons which the facility may need extra staff. Temporary staffing can provide a much-needed solution for rural communities across Canada which frequently experience healthcare staff shortages. In some cases, facilities may bring on temporary staff when permanent staffing is preferred due to difficulty filling the position. One of the advantages of bringing on locum coverage when permanent staffing can not be found is that locum staff may decide to stay on for the longer term once they discover what the facility has to offer. Temporary staffing can be an effective strategy to maintain continuity of services and care for patients.
